Allergy-free Applesauce Recipe

Applesauce makes a great spread for waffles or pancakes.  This homemade applesauce recipe is gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, egg free, nut free and seafood free.

6 lbs unsprayed apples

12 ozs unsweetened apple-juice concentrate

When buying apples, select either Yellow Delicious, Rome Beauties, Jonathans or McIntoshes.  Avoid Red Delicious as they are not as flavorful.

  1. Peel the apples, quarter each apple, remove the seeds, cut each piece into 4 chunks and place them in a large saucepan.

  2. Pour in the juice concentrate and bring to boil.  Reduce heat, cover the saucepan and simmer until the apples are tender.  Different varieties of apples requires different timing to become tender.  McIntoshes requires 15 minutes, others, like Jonathans will need about 40 minutes.

  3. If needed, add a little water to the apples while cooking to prevent sticking.  Stir constantly and avoid over-cooking the apples until they are mushy.

  4. Serve either hot or cold.  Store any excess applesauce in covered glass jars or food containers and place in refrigerator for later use.  Makes 3 quarts.
