10 oz of butter or soya margarine

6 oz of brown sugar

6 oz of golden syrup

12 oz of rolled oats

4 large Bramley apples

Juice of 1 lemon

1 tsp of ground cinnamon

Pinch of salt

  1. Turn on the oven and pre-heat to 375F or 190C

  2. Prepare a 20 cm (8") baking tin

  3. Peel the apples, remove the cores and slice them.

  4. Put the apples in a small saucepan, then add in the lemon juice and a little water and bring to boil.  Cover the saucepan and simmer for about 10 mins or until the apple is soft.

  5. While the apples are cooking, prepare the oat mixture

  6. Put the butter or soya margarine, sugar and syrup in another saucepan over a moderate heat until all the ingredients are melted.  Do not let the mixture boil and stir constantly to prevent sticking

  7. Add in the oats, cinnamon and salt and stir them well.

  8. Transfer half of the oat mixture onto the prepared baking tin, spread and press down firmly using a palette knife or the back of a spoon

  9. Mashed the cooked apple to a soft puree and spread them on top of the oat mixture.

  10. Spread the remaining half of the oat mixture on top of the apple puree.

  11. Bake in the oven for 25-30 mins or until golden brown

  12. Remove from oven and allow to cool for 5 mins

  13. Cut into squares or fingers but leave them in the tin to cool for a further 10 mins before removing from the tin.
